When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
2022

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
I’ve always had a passion for Field Trials being competitive by nature, and I’ve been a fan of the game since 1987. I bought my first trial dog in 1991, but only had the time and resources to play the Hunt Test game and only sporadically due to my career in the USAF and raising a family. After retiring from the service in 2012, I got back into training and running hunt tests and eventually field trials when I purchased my current dog, “Yeager.”

Who are your training partners at home?
Al Arthur and Bill Bailey of Sandhill Retrievers – when I’m not training alone at home in Michigan.

What is the origin of your dog’s name?
I retired from the Air Force after serving 27 years as a Commander, Instructor/Evaluator Pilot, flying the supersonic T-38 and B-1 Bomber. General Chuck Yeager, USAF Test pilot, was the first man to break the sound barrier, and he was my aviation role model. Hence the name Supersonic Flyboy, “Yeager.”

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
Yeager’s favorite thing to do when he’s not training is to play Frisbee with his Kong Frisbee; that and riding in the back seat of my truck despite having a brand new fancy 3-hole Ainley!

You and your dog have survived nine series of the National Derby Championship. You are about to come to the line for the 10th series with a chance to be crowned the 2022 National Derby Champion. What song and artist would you want to hear playing as the two of you come to the line?

Owner Name: Nik Koumoundouros & Woody Woodson

Dog Name: Tag

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
September 17, 2005 - Jayhawk Retriever Club

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
My first dog, Theo, was getting older. I wanted to get a puppy to train for duck hunting. I got Emma when she was 8 weeks old. Later, I met Ron Geels through Ducks Unlimited and began training with him and a couple local pros, Jim Swan & Mike Hafley. I trained Emma myself. I remember riding with Ron to Jayhawk and staying at the world-famous Copa in Kingman, KS. Emma and I JAMed our first Derby and if felt like winning a National. I am excited to be a part of the 2022 NDC; the Derby is the entry point for new participants to enter our sport.

Who are your training partners at home?
Tim Milligan (Pro), Woody Woodson, Seth Kelly, Rich Davis, Ron Root, Jan Connely. In addition, the team at Midway Retrievers. They are amazing and take such great care of the dogs. Woody and I am eternally grateful for all they do.

What is the origin of your dog’s name?
Tim & Jenn Milligan named Tag; they also raised the litter. Woody’s wife chose her registered name. She is a handful, and we lovingly refer to her as Tag-manian Devil.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
Tag was a slow starter, kind of a dud puppy. Tim and Jenn raised her with the help of Shannon Meggs, who works for Tim. I almost purchased Tag when she was a puppy after my dog Voodoo washed out of training. Tim had a very Tim Milligan way of explaining that Voodoo wasn’t going to make a FT dog. He sent me a text message with Tag’s pedigree. When I asked what that was, he replied “your new dog.” Message received!

I initially passed on Tag for another dog, Pink, who was closer to running trials. Pink qualified for this year’s NDC as well; however, she turned 2 in April. Fast forward about a year and the opportunity to purchase Tag with Woody Woodson presented itself and here we are today. BTW, Tag is no longer a dud.

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
Rumor believes that my only purpose as her owner/handler is to pay for her entries, feed her and take her to a trial. At that point, she instructs me to hold her beer and watch this!

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?

Who are your training partners at home?
Ron Ainley, Bob West, Dave Robertson, Bobby Raasch, Ed Staili, Ted Lewin, many others in Iowa, Wisconsin and places near and far when we congregate in North Texas.

What is the origin of your dog’s name?
Out of respect for the breeders, the unofficial kennel name “Meadow Woods.” “Just” after her mama. “Lil” after her mama’s mama, “FC-AFC Lil Whiskey Girl” and “Sweeter” from her sire.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
I was hesitant to enter her in a Derby early last spring in Texas when she was just over 11 months old. She could do the work but I was concerned about line manners, the event atmosphere and the fact that we would arrive in TX just a couple days before the event. I decided to ask to run as test dog and we did for every series. She stepped on every mark and would have won decisively. She was given an honorary “Test Dog JAM” ribbon. Most of the time green ribbons are a little disappointing but that one is pretty special. The next day she ran as test dog in the Q on the land blind, and lined it. We quit on a high note and went elsewhere to train.

Dog Name: Traeger

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
1994

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
I bought a nice FT-bred puppy, “Webster,” from Chris Smith in Madison Lake, MN to do AKC Hunt Tests. Chris talked me into running a Derby and we got a Reserve Jam. I was hooked at that point. With the wonderful training and coaching from Chris Smith, Webster and I got our Master hunt test title then Chris convinced us to try the Field Trial game. Well, we jumped in and entered two field trials back-to-back. Lo’ and behold our second trial we won the Amateur and got 3rd in the Open. Holy Smokes, I was addicted, then teamed up with the great Bill Eckett of Blackwater Retrievers and Webster quickly earned his FC and competed in the 2000 National Retriever Championship in Ardmore, OK. Webster introduced me to a whole new world and because of him, I have met the most amazing people through the sport and have made lifelong friendships I will always cherish.

Who are your training partners at home?
Tony & Judy Despenas, Tanja & Casey Frye and the late John Goossen.

What is the origin of your dog’s name?
My husband wanted one of those fancy expensive Traeger grills. I convinced him this puppy was cheaper and we’d name him “Traeger.” Sorry darling, I lied.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
When Traeger was about 10 weeks old, we took him through a puppy kindergarten class with my training partner, Tanja Frye, at Cyclone Country Kennel Club in Ames, IA. After the first class, I injured my knee and was on crutches so I made Brad complete the class with Traeger. That little puppy developed a very special bond with Brad. They are never far apart at home in the house, barn or kennel. Where Brad goes, Traeger goes. If I ask Traeger to do something, he looks at Brad who then ‘gives him permission’ to listen to mom. But when he is training, he could care less about who’s on the line with him. He is all business and thinks he is the one in charge. He challenges me to be a stronger, more patient partner on the line.

Questionnaire
Owner Name: David Barrow & Wendy Buckler

Dog Name: Angus

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
I had the privilege of watching, gunning and helping at field trials in the 1980’s. My competing in field trials began in 2000.

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
My grandfather had an old Acme whistle which he used for the first Labrador I had ever seen as a child. The progression from fox hunting through English Setters, Beagles, to my first Labrador Retriever in the early 80’s seemed fitting as I began to waterfowl hunt more often. After learning from hunt tests, sanctioned club trials and once my son and daughter were in their teens, my training groups evolved into field trials.

Who are your training partners at home?
I train with many amateur handlers from time to time, but my main training partner is Wendy Buckler.

What is the origin of your dog’s name?
I have had yellow labs for many years, and Angus is my first black lab and happens to also be the grandson of my dog Macy. His name comes from the AC/DC song Back in Black and the lead singer Angus Young since it appears I am now back running blacks.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
When Angus came to me at 12 weeks, the guy raising him for me for a few weeks said, “look at this crazy dog.” He held him up by his middle and Angus FROZE. His head stared off into the horizon and never moved. Every time you picked him up, he just went into a trance. Funniest thing I had ever seen in a dog.

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
May 2012

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
Derek wanted to run field trials & once our kids were older, he got me Abby”, to see if I too would like this game. “Abby” is my heart & I was hooked.

Who are your training partners at home?
Horsetooth Retriever Kennel – Kenny Trott & Marcy Wright

When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
I ran in my first Retriever Field Trial in 2003. I had been running in Pointing Dog Field Trial since 1975.

What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
We had been competing with Britanny’s in Field Trials since 1975, as I stated above. We had owned and competed in conformation and obedience with Golden Retriever since 1975 also. I have hunted waterfowl and upland game with Retrievers and Pointing Dogs since 1973. We bought a Golden Retriever puppy in 2001 who had field bloodlines and we started doing training with him, “Sky, for hunt tests and hunting. He showed some ability and had great drive. We bought a second Golden Retriever puppy, “Pete, a year later with the specific intention of competing with him in the field in hunt tests and/or field trials if he had the right characteristics. It urned out he did and we started to train him for field competition.

Who are your training partners at home?
We are very fortunate to have an abundance of training partners. Most importantly, Loki has been trained from basics until now by our good friend and professional trainer, Paul Knutson, of Gun Club Labradors(GCL). Our GCL team includes a number of owners and handlers in northern Colorado. We also train with a number of other amateurs including RenateVan Allen on a regular basis.

What is the origin of your dog’s name?
We have a current naming theme involving Scandinavian origins. My wife Deb and “I are both Scandinavian. Loki is a well-known Norwegian character.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog.
Loki is a very big, handsome young dog. He is also athletic and can jump or climb “anything.” We joke about needing to “put a saddle on him” when we run him. When he was a puppy he would regularly jump out of our fenced backyard and great us at the front door. We had to put up six foot tall panels to keep him in. I don’t think we need them now because he is somewhat better trained, but this is the first dog in almost 16 years to so easily be able to jump that fence.
